Minutes of the Executive Committee Meeting held on
Wednesday 11 June 2025 at 7 .00pm
PRESENT: Bob Moseley, Maggie Moseley, Trish Jordas, Laurie Scullard, Steve Bold, Ian Sisson, Christine Squire
Steve welcomed everyone to the meeting.
1.APOLOGIES – Mark Heywood, Rob Howarth
2. MINUTES OF THE PREVIOUS MEETING were agreed.
3. MATTERS ARISING- There were no matters arising.
4 .CORRESPONDENCE and MEMBERS’ SUGGESTIONS
Allithwaite Bowling Club had sent a letter asking for help in fundraising for machinery for their green. As a gesture of goodwill the club donated £100.
It has been brought to the Club’s notice via Mercedes that some people who come down for Friday afternoon social bowling are having to wait a long time for a game. The problem seems to ariss when members come too late to obtain a number, which happens around 2pm. It also depends on the numbers attending. On some occasions we have in excess of 20 participants. It has therefore been suggested that we also have social bowling at 2pm on Wednesday afternoons. Hopefully that will alleviate the problem. Don’t forget the green is open at all times apart from when there is a match on.
5. TREASURERS REPORT
Christine reported that all issues with Santander are sorted and that she will be using Online Banking in future. It was agreed that for future meetings Christine will produce a statement outlining any major expenditure and the balance of the clubs finances at that date. It was agreed that she would also empty the cash tin fortnightly.
6. MEMBERSHIP REPORT
Laurie reported that the we have gained 2 new members since the last report.
7. GROUNDS AND MANTENANCE REPORT
In his absence Mark had left a maintenance report, as follows.
The green has shown good signs of recovery this year.
It was treated with 4 bags of Mo Bacter (Moss and thatch treatment) prior to the start of the season and 2 bags of Rigby Taylor Active eight, 8-0-16 fertiliser in a period of rain just before the extended dry period.
The green stood up well to the drought this time due to a large reduction in the thatch layer and the efforts of Mike, Barbara and especially Mark Burridge keeping it watered.
As soon as the rain came it recovered very quickly.
Overall the green is in good condition and bowling well.
Mark
The hedge cutting around the green has been carried out by, Ian, Les, William, Laurie, Steve, Mark B and Rob. The car park area and Chairman’s lawn has been cut by Paul Crowder and Rob. The banking above the car park has been cut by Brian. Thanks to all concerned for your hard work
8. SOCIAL SUB COMMITTEE
Ian reported that there were no social events planned at the present time.
9. FORTHCOMING EVE
Sat 28 June Johnston Trophy. Details are on the Noticeboard. Closing date will be Monday 23 at 12 noon. The draw will take place that afternoon.
Sat 23 August Taylor Trophy (It is anticipated it will be a 3-2-1 scoring system as last year but more details later)
The draw for the Singles Competition will take place following this meeting and Steve will notify players of their first round partners.
10. SAFEGUARDING AND CHILD PROTECTION POLICY
There were no safeguarding issues.
11. CHURCH GRASS CUTTING
The Church grass cutting has taken place several times now and positive comments have been received by members of the public. Some extra work has been carried out and it was agreed that we should claim for this at the end of the season. Thanks to Bob and Alan Dunham for their efforts.
12. ANY OTHER BUSINESS
1. Discussions took place with regard to the replacement of match equipment. It was agreed to
purchase 2 of the new style bowls measures. Ann Anderson has kindly donated 4 new
footers to be used for matches. The current match jacks are due to be tested this year and this
matter will be followed up at the end of the season.
2. A new brush for the green is to be obtained by Ian.
3. It was agreed that Captains requiring players from lower teams to cover holiday etc. would
no longer take the top player from the team below so that the lower teams would not be unduly weakened.
4. It was suggested that a mid-season Captains meeting might be beneficial, but the committee agreed that it was better if issues were dealt with between Captains as and when they occurred.
5. The committee wished to thank all the Captains who were operating under difficult circumstances due to player shortages etc.
6. Thanks to Laurie who has puts a No Smoking/Vaping Sign on the clubhouse window.
7. It was brought to the attention of the committee that there is a shortage of people to
score and measure etc. on home match nights. We would be grateful for any extra help mainly on Thursdays. Even if you have never scored a match or measured someone will be happy to show you the ropes.

would stay on afterwards for cheese, wine and a chat.
CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
Good news my final Chairman’s Report. Do I sense you’re thinking the day would never come. Well it has – so listen carefully.
Considering all the sadness surrounding the club in recent times, with the loss of both players and partners, we could all do with a big cheer up.
Hopefully coming together again for the new bowling season will be just the tonic needed, particularly for those who have had to bear such a loss.
I, personally, think if we can all adopt a positive and optimistic mindset going forward for this season, we can put our gloom behind us and also reverse the disappointments of last year’s league result.
I firmly believe with the players we have, both the A and B teams are capable of pushing for the top placings.
It goes without saying that the high of last season was of course, the Kendal C Team led by Trish and Chez, for not only gaining promotion but finishing top of the league winning £ prize money. I am sure if they can reproduce the same form they will be pushing the B team all the way
For your information the first game in Division 5 is between our B and C teams – what an opener ( Place your bets early).
I must mention the Rothay B team and say that they too are on their way up having not finished the season at the bottom of Division 2 where they have languished for many a year. So Rothay A team players had better look out as your positions could be very precarious this season.
The social bowling on Friday afternoons went from strength to strength and was cheerfully enjoyed by all, with the elderly lads and newcomers playing alongside the more experienced players. I would like to thank both Ann Anderson and Mike Fish for running the sessions
With regard to the social bowling Competitions, the Johnston trophy (New Format), the Taylor Trophy with Jacobs Join and End of Season Competition with Pie and Peas were extremely well attended and hopefully the members will respond with the same enthusiasm this coming season.
The Mike Fish Men’s and Ladies Knockout Competition which was running during the season, with Quarter, Semi and Final matches being run on 1 day towards the end of the season proved to be popular with most members taking part. Hopefully, this event will run again this season using this same format – Well done Mike.
Individually, it was nice to see the likes of Paul Crowder who stepped up to the A team 3 times and Graham Honeybone who played up from the C team once for the A team and several times for the B team. Well done you two and also to all the other B team players who played in the A team when necessary
Also Alan Dunham acquitted himself well as a regular A team player – stick with it Alan the best is yet to come.
However, the most amazing feat of the season (guess what? – anyone) was Dave Archer winning the Taylor Trophy – what a player, but I suspect Bill might have had some input. Nevertheless it was nice to see Dave’s big smile – the likes of which we will never see again – wherever you are Dave – well done mate.
Nearly there – I think some of last seasons disappointing early results were down to the state of the green with pre season practice not being possible. But what a transformation has taken place for the coming season. Much of the credit for this yet again, is down to Mark’s efforts. With luck and early practice, we should be able to get off to a good start with some real positive result.
I feel I ought to mention Rebecca who joined us as a social member midway through last season on the understanding that we allowed her to clean not only the clubhouse but the toilets too. To top that on match days she takes over the kitchen making tea for both home and away players and supporters. What a breath of fresh air she is around the place – Welcome Rebecca.
As Chairman for the last few years, I cannot think how I and the club would have coped without such a proactive committee, knowing that if anything needed doing it was done with such professionalism and no fuss. Thank you all for making my job easy.
So would you join me to show our appreciation for the committee. But not only that, I thank you the membership for making this club what it is and remember any club is only as good as its members – so well done you lot, Before I finish, on behalf of the Club, I would like to thank Roy and Julia for donating an outside bench to the club. I am sure Roy will spend many an hour sitting there mulling things over. Also to Janet and Denise for donating a bench in memory of John Mac. How we all miss his jokes.
Finally, I would like to welcome our new Chairman Steve who I am sure is more than capable of doing a good job and bringing in some fresh thinking and new ideas . I trust you will all give him the backing and support you have all given to me.
Thank you all.
SOCIAL SUB COMMITTEE REPORT
Our first organised event was last September which took the form of an End of Season Friday Afternoon informal bowing competition followed by Pie and Peas. We were blessed with lovely weather and a good turnout, making this a most enjoyable event.
On the 1st November we organised a Halloween Evening at the clubhouse with the side panels creating a further temporary room, decorated with carved pumpkins and candles. This was well attended, everyone (some in fancy dress) enjoyed hot dogs and pumpkin pie and tested their memory with the Halloween themed quiz devised by our resident Quizmaster, Steve Bold. The carved pumpkin competition, judged by Rebecca, was won by Alan and Jan Dunham.
Last week, and most of you were there, we organised an indoor bowling and dominoes event in the Village Hall, again with the ever-popular Pie and Peas. Bob took charge of the bowling on our one remaining indoor mat, with a high degree of skill apparent, whilst the dominoes was organised by Steve. The bowling comp was won by on-form Christine and Mike and Martin and Pam knocked spots off the opposition to win the domino comp.
Thanks are due to all the helpers which make these events such good fun and special thanks to fellow sub committee members, Diane, Rob and Rebecca.
